The Kerlin Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Chung Eun-Mo from 26 November - 8 January 2005.

For this show, the artist's fifth at the Kerlin Gallery, Chung Eun-Mo continues to explore the vitality of abstract painting with her highy individual and elegant compositions that explore new spaces filled with subtle light and delicate colour. Regarding the evocation of space in her paintings Aidan Dunne recently wrote:

'The spaces in her paintings, for example, are open and fluid rather than fixed and recessive. They are about the flow and interchange of feelings and ideas rather than hierarchical imposition.'

Chung Eun-Mo's work is principally concerned with the planar distribution of colour, something she has in the past attributed to the influence of Korean and Italian architecture. By juxtaposing different colours, shapes and shades of light, she achieves the effect of spatial structuring, evoking both real and imaginary spaces. The tensions she creates between triangles, rectangles and lozenges of colour result in resonant, moving spaces full of the play of light.

Born and educated in Korea, Chung Eun-Mo moved to New York in the mid-60's and has been based in Italy and Ireland since the late 1980's. In the last two decades Chung Eun-Mo has exhibited widely including solo exhibitions in New York, Rome, Munich and Seoul. She showed a highly acclaimed installation at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 1994 and has had solo exhibitions around the world, including the Staedtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich (1992) and a retrospective at Primo Piano, Rome (1999). Her work is included in the collections of the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Connecticut; the Staedische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich; the Ulster Museum, Belfast; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin and the Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania and in many private collections worldwide.

A major 15 year retrospective Chung Eun-Mo paintings entitled 'Painting 1989-2004' is currently on show at the Galway Arts Centre. This exhibition, which is accompanied by a new publication, will travel to the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Sligo (20 January - 6 March, 2005); the Palazzo di Primavera, Centro Espositivo del Comune di Terni (Spring 2005) and Sungkok Art Museum, Seoul, Korea (Winter 2005 - Spring 2006).
